Making Tax Digital

The most fundamental change to the administration of the tax system for at least 20 years.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the most fundamental change to the administration of the tax system for at least 20 years.

MTD for VAT

Since April 2022, all VAT registered businesses should now be submitting their VAT returns via approved cloud software under MTD

MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment (ITSA)

From April 2024 all sole trader business owners and landlords with annual turnover of over £10,000 will need to submit quarterly returns to HMRC.

(General partnerships will not be required to join MTD for ITSA until April 2025)

The essential elements for businesses are:

  • Paper records will no longer be sufficient: HMRC are looking to make it mandatory for businesses to use functional, compatible software to keep accounting records. Paper accounting records will cease to meet the requirements of tax law.
  • Quarterly reporting: There will be a requirement to submit updates to HMRC each quarter directly from compliant accounting software.
  • Year-ends: There will be a requirement for all affected sole-trader businesses to have a 5 April year end. We will help you adjust this if necessary.
